Alcatel-Lucent is the leading IP networking, ultra-broadband access and cloud technology specialist, and has a clear statement on sustainability: “We are dedicated to making global communications more innovative, sustainable and accessible for people, businesses and governments worldwide”. With a supply chain spanning the globe, Alcatel-Lucent sustainable procurement team is setting best practice examples in collaborating with its suppliers’ to measure and improve sustainability performance in alignment with its corporate goals.

Like many of its peers in the technology sector, Alcatel-Lucent sustainable procurement relies heavily on its ecosystem of suppliers, integrating them deeply into the product development and production processes.  It requires its suppliers to comply with EICC guidelines (e.g. for supplier code of conduct) and the UN Global Compact’s 10 principles as a minimum basis for defining their program and activities.

Alcatel-Lucent sustainable procurement has a very proactive approach with its suppliers to inform them of the company’s requirements and most importantly, to help them drive their individual sustainability performance. Another important challenge lies in the traceability of products, which is encapsulated by the company’s conflict minerals program, aimed at identifying the sourcing of gold, tantalum, tin and tungsten.

In addition, ethics in the supply chain is a priority for Alcatel-Lucent sustainable procurement, with a focus on monitoring the levels of risk in the supply chain by systematically screening all suppliers and retaining only those who present minimal risks. This means that through their anti-corruption screening process, suppliers are rejected if their level of risk is too high. Finally, health and safety is one of the main challenges to be tackled, especially in installation networks companies with tower climbing activities. Thus, Alcatel Lucent has implemented an Environment Health and Safety (EHS) program where suppliers are surveyed on these criteria as well.
